India’s soon going to see a 5G spectrum auction. The Cabinet has finally given the nod for it. There’s no official announcement yet, but the sources tell BusinessToday that the Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved spectrum pricing for the 5G auction on Tuesday. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) will immediately start working on releasing Notice Inviting Applications (NIA). Once the DoT has released NIA, it takes at least eight weeks or close to two months for the spectrum auction to begin....

5G spectrum auction is what every telecom enthusiast in India is waiting for. The telecom operators are looking forward to the decision of the Cabinet, which will finalise the spectrum pricing for the auctions. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) released Notice Inviting Applications (NIA) for the 5G spectrum auction on Wednesday. The auction is all set to take place on July 26, 2022. DoT said that the telcos wouldn’t have to pay SUC (Spectrum Usage Charges) along with the Bank Guarantees (BGs) for the spectrum they acquire during the upcoming auction. This means that the outgo of cash for the telcos will reduce significantly....

Airtel Deploys LTE 900 Technology in Kolkata The Sunil Bharti Mittal led telecom operator has used the 900 MHz spectrum which was previously being used for 3G network to do this. It is worth noting that the 900 MHz spectrum is considered a premium airwave segment and Airtel will be refarming these airwaves to relay 4G network in Kolkata. The Company is deploying state-of-the-art L900 technology in the 900 MHz band to complement its 4G services in the 2300 Mhz and 1800 Mhz bands....

Bharti Airtel just came out with its quarterly results. The telco has reported an average revenue per user (ARPU) of Rs 153 in Q2 of FY22. The ARPU has grown by Rs 10 YoY as it was Rs 142 in Q2 of FY21. At the same time, the telco’s 4G users have also increased by 39.9 million YoY basis and by 8.1 million QoQ basis. Airtel’s 4G users now comprise 60% of the total subscriber base....

NCF Removed for FTA Channels This new move means that while subscribers were limited to only 100 FTA channels on Rs 130 NCF charge, now they will be able to watch more than 100 FTA channels by paying the same amount since there won’t be any additional slab NCF. To recall, the new pricing regime governs that the subscribers will pay two parts of the bill, one which will be NCF (Network Capacity Charge) and the other which will be content charges....

Bharti Airtel is expanding its broadband network to 2,000 towns across India with 35 million home passes. The telco is planning to do this in the next three years. In the recent earnings call, Bharti Airtel CEO, Gopal Vittal said Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) is a very large opportunity for the company. Vittal shared that Airtel is continuing to scale up investments so that it can take its broadband network to over 2,000 towns across the country with 35 million home passes....

Bharti Airtel, the second-largest telecom operator in India, is in the top 20th percentile of CLSA India coverage of over 150 companies across sectors based on the research firm’s 2022 ESG scores. Amongst peers, Bharti fared better in independence, discipline, transparency, social areas and environment. In 2022, Bharti’s ESG score was 78.7, which is 11% - 23% higher than the country score and sector average scores. Bharti Airtel, the second-largest telecom operator in India, had the most complaints from consumers in FY22.
